Trying to Get Back on Track


So as you know last week I was in Texas.  Now while I was in Texas I did very good.  I ran three separate days plus I ate a ton of fresh fruit.  When you live in Iowa in the winter you don’t get very good fruit, let’s just say it was picked and shipped before it turned the correct color.  So when I got home I jumped on the old scale.  Well I gained 3 of the 5 pounds back that I lost since the first of January.  Pat myself on the back considering all the alcohol I drank that week.  Okay, I said to myself this will be easy to drop these 3 pounds.  Well guess what, I gained 2 pounds in 2 days.  What!?!?!?  For some reason when I get home from vacation I have a terrible time getting back on track and all I want to do is eat and eat and eat and eat and eat and eat.  It doesn’t matter how good or bad I was on vacation, the first couple of days back I feel like I have been deprived forever and so I just stuff myself.  I kid you not I had so much sugar that last 2 days it is crazy.

So today, I have vowed to get back on track.  No more sugar.  Must do a sugar detox, which I will show my plan tomorrow.  I am going to figure out a plan today plus I need to get back on the wagon for exercising.  That is another thing that has gone to the wayside this week. 

Must refocus myself.  As you know I have a goal to lose 40 pounds by the time I turn 40 in June.  Hence 40 by 40.  Which this week puts me back to my starting point that I was at on January 1st. 

Do you ever have trouble getting back on track after a vacation?  If you do, how do you get yourself started again?  If you don’t, how do you avoid dropping off the wagon?

Childhood Obesity


Childhood Obesity is a huge problem in this country.

“Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. It occurs when a child is well above the normal weight for his or her age and height. Childhood obesity is particularly troubling because the extra pounds often start children on the path to health problems that were once confined to adults, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Childhood obesity can also lead to poor self-esteem and depression.” (Source)

I realize that they must teach the school kids about childhood obesity but what happens when it affects a child who isn’t obese?

Chickie is far from obese but she really listens to what they tell her about nutrition and exercise.  The only problem is she really takes it to heart.  She makes comments about her thighs and her butt.  She is only 11 years old. 

I understand that they must address the issue so the kids that are obese will hopefully listen and change their habits but what about the kids that are already skinny?  I am concerned that the skinny children, like Chickie, will end up with eating disorders.  How do we fight that? 

I take the time to talk with her and explain to her that no, she doesn’t have big thighs or a big butt and yes it is okay to eat.  She has cut down on what she eats plus she eats really, really slow.  I asked her one day why and she said they told her to eat slow because it takes your brain 20 minutes after you start eating to know when you get full. 

I have talked to her about eating healthy, exercising and enjoying life and not worrying about being obese because she is far from it.  She still has it in her mind though that she will be fat. 

As a mother this concerns me.  I don’t want her to have an eating disorder because I think that is just as bad as being obese but are they pushing the limit on childhood obesity with the kids that don’t have to worry about it?  What needs to be changed and how should it be addressed better?

Fitness Friday


Hey, hey, hey (remember Fat Albert saying that on the Saturday morning cartoons as a kid?)  Anyways, it is Friday.  Yeah, where did the week go?  Getting geared up for the weekend and hoping you have major plans.  Ours is going to be busy plus the humidty came back so the air is on.

Now on to Fitness Friday which is a recap of my workout routine the past week.

Saturday –  5.93 mile bike ride in 59.49 minutes (did this with the kiddos so it was a little slow)

Sunday – Walk 3 min/Run 3 min for 33 minutes and went 2.55 miles

Monday – 20 minute walk/ 30 min circuit class / 50 min water walk

Tuesday – Walk 3 min/Run 3 min for 33 minutes and went 2.46 miles / 30 min. yoga

Wednesday – 30 min circuit class

Thursday – Rest day

Friday – Walk 3 min/Run 3 min for 33 minutes and went 2.61 miles / 30 min. circuit class

What a busy week I have had.  Didn’t do to bad in my fitness and the running definitely got easier.

So this morning I got up and did my 3 min walk/3 min run for 33 minutes and went 2.61 miles.

Me oh my, this running thing is defintely getting easier and I am defintely getting faster with my runs.  Who knew, I might actually become a runner.

Now off to my eye doctor appointment and then work.  I am running a little late today.  Have a great friday.

Fitness and Weightloss Update


TGIF.  Yes this post is late but it has been one of those days.

So I am going to start a new thing with the blog.  I am just starting this and as I have more time to sit and try to figure out what to add to this post ie pictures and what nots, it will be pretty boring this week.  My goal is to do a bunch of work on the blog this weekend.  So…..

Since it is Friday, I am trying to exercise more and lose weight I am going to do Fitness Friday Posts.  This will give a recap of my workouts for the week plus how Hubby and I’s weightloss goals are coming along.  As you know, we are both trying to lose 20 pounds by October.  So here it goes.

Now for a recap of my workouts.

Saturday – ran/walk for 30 minutes which covered 1.5 miles

Sunday – Walked 30 minutes

Monday – Ran/walk 1.73 miles in 23 minutes; Circuit class for 30 minutes; Water walk for 1 hour

Tuesday – Water walk for 40 minutes

Wednesday – Circuit class for 30 minutes; Walk for 30 minutes

Thursday – Barre Method for 40 minutes; Kickboxing for 15 minutes

Friday – Circuit class for 30 minutes.

Review – Obviously I need to push myself to run more.  But overall I did pretty well for my workouts.  I am trying to do at least an hour of exercise everyday.  Plus I know, I will need to get rest days in there and I will eventually figure that out.  Now off to enjoy the rest of the night.  Have a great night.

Beer Spill


BEER SPILL: Cans, Cases and Kegs of beer spilled onto highway 141 Thursday(source)

So I was watching the local news this morning and one of the headlines was a beer spill in Des Moines yesterday.  Apparently, the bottom of the trailer fell out that was carrying 30,000 pounds of beer which were cans, bottles and kegs.  Can you imagine drive along the highway and you come upon this.  I would think this is one heck of a party someone is having.  The local police were staying with the spill until it was all cleaned up so everyone can, bottle and keg was accounted for.  No free beer for anyone there.

So this morning I got up to do my run.

The moon was still out when I left.  It was so pretty this morning plus there was a hage because of all of the humidity that we have. 

So I did my run go?

 

So I went a little farther than Wednesday and I little faster.  Yeah me.  I am hoping this running gets easier.  Today I actually had an Ipod to listen to (mine is lost) so I found that if I concentrate on the music rather than the running, it isn’t that bad.  How did I feel when I got done?

Up close I looked like this:

I was one sweaty mess.  It is that humid out.  When I got inside I checked the weather for the next 7 days.

Oh my goodness.  Now wonder I was all sweaty.  It is going to be hot, hot, and more hot for the next 7 days.  I will defintely have to get my runs done in the early morning hours.  Well since it is so hot that means it is smoothie time:

I dug out the bad boy today

In the blender went:

  • 1 cup skim milk
  • 1 whole peach
  • 6 fresh strawberries
  • 1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
  • 8 ice cubes

Yum, yum and more yum.  This hit the spot after my long run.

Well today Hubby and I have officially kicked off our weight loss goals.  We each plan to lose 20 pounds by October 15.  So to hold us each accountable I will post our weight today and then our weight loss every Friday.

Hubby is 5’10 and weighs 186.5 pounds (he doesn’t know I am posting this)

Me, I am 5’3 and weigh 145.5 pounds. 

If Hubby loses his 20 pounds he will get a new Ipod Touch.  If I lose 20 pounds – nothing, Hubby was supposed to come up with something for me and he hasn’t.  Typical man right?

So today is Day 5 of the Bible in 90 days.  You need to read Exodus 1:1 through Exodus 15:18.  If you read yesterday (which I got everything read) you will know that it was about Jacob and his sons, especially Joseph and how Joseph saved the people of Egypt from the 7 years of famine.  It is amazing to me how deceiftul everyone was back then.  I always think of the people of the Old Testament being such followers of God and they were but yet they were very deceitful and manipulative to each other.

Trying to figure it out.


I am trying to figure out how to jump start my weightloss.  Right now I am at the weight that I weighed when I was pregnant with my daughter, who is now 10 years old.  I am so, so frustrated with myself which in turn causes me to eat more.  I end up eating a ton of junk food starting at about 8:00 and not quitting until 9:00 or 9:30.  For example, last night I ate nachos,  party mix and then some candy.  I don’t know what takes over me but I just can’t help myself.  I know I need to really start watching what I eat but I feel like I almost need to starve myself just to lose any weight.  I started at the gym 2 months ago, going 3 days per week to a circuit training class.  Since I started at the gym, I have lost nothing.  Yep, you read that right, nothing.  Which in turn makes me frustrated.  I feel that I have been going to the gym for 2 months I should have lost 10 pounds, at least.  The other thing that has me so, so frustrated is that summer is almost here and I know none of my clothes are going to fit me.  Which in turn makes me frustrated and then I eat.  Yes, I am an emotional eater which is a huge problem for me to try to get over this obstacle.  How do you quit being an emotional eater?

The other problem I have, is trying to exercise on my  own.  For the last 2 months I have wanted to start running.  Yes, I have done it a few times but I get going for about a week and then I quit.  I need to run in the morning which means I need to get up at 5.  Problem:  I am not a morning person.  At night by the time I get home from work, eat supper, clean up and then spend time with the kiddos it is 7:00.  Plus we are in the middle of remodeling the basement so when I have free time Hubby wants me helping him with the basement.  I know that I need to take 30 inutes to go run but at night I just don’t feel like it.  Question:  How do I jump start my running program?  Do I sign myself up for a 5K race so that I know I need to start training, would that make me start running and exercising?  I just know I am very, very frustrated and my clothes are not going to fit this summer.  I have got to do something and it should have been done 2 months ago. 

I am trying to figure out what to do and yes, I am very, very frustrated and any advice would help me out greatly.  I have 2 weeks to drop some weight so that at least some of my summer clothes will fit.

Recent eats:

As you can see, I did not take pictures of all the junk I ate last night.  I do eat pretty healthy during the day.  My downfall, night time.  This is so frustrating.  I know I need to stay out of the kitchen at night.  That is my goal for tonight.  Do not eat after 6:00.  Plus my trainer says to elimate carbs.  Does that help?

Here is a picture of me from Yesterday.  I am 5’2 and weigh 148 pounds.  Yes, I am going to start tracking my weightloss here and hopefully that will help me be accountable and want to stick with the weightloss program.  I am going to eat healthier.  Which entails less carbs, more veggies and fruits.  Anyone else have any recommendations?  I will also exercise 30 minuters per day 6 days per week.  The 30 minutes will not include my time at the gym at the circuit class.  I will exercise for 30 minutes on my own. 

If anyone else has any advice, encouraging words and stories about their own weightloss, I am open for any and all suggestions.
